Apparently we were dropped onto a wreck. I saw a few bits of metal, but it was mainly large rocks / reefs on the bottom. The water was full of debris - small bits of seaweed and general crud, most likely due to the recent rain. Not a great deal to see - urchins and soft corals being the main sights. A few small starfish and a crab or two. We did manage to find an area without as much debris, but there wasn't much life to be found either as it was a sandy bottom. On the way up though we ran into several rather large jellyfish!

My first dive with Marine Quest from Eyemouth and indeed my first dive in England. The wreck is very spread out - nothing recognisable as a ship though - did find lots of bits of metal which I'm sure used to be rivited together! Loads of urchins and soft corals, with a few large fish (or the same fish observed many times). Found a shoal of teeny tiny fish and a couple of crabs too.

Back to using some rented gear as my regs and cylinder haven't been serviced for a few years. Also had a shot of Shug's Force Fins - really want a pair! Managed okay with buoyancy considering the 3 year gap, but a wee bit up and down on the safety stop. Lots of wee fish, crabs, scallops, star fish urchins and soft corals. Even found a sponge that looked like a pumpkin.

First dive with Shug and I even tried his fancy ForceFins - which were really very nice indeed! Hardly any effort required to propel myself! A lot of jellies, wrasse, star fish, dead men's fingers, anemones, urchins, crabs and lobsters. Even saw a huge Cod! Had a moment when I shot to the surface - had air trapped somewhere, but just couldn't get rid of it. Got back down for another swim around though!

Loads (and I mean hundreds) of tiny hermit crabs all over the place! Saw a lot of egg sacks for some creature - will try to find out what. Ended having a nice swim what looked like through rock faces, but it turned out to be a dead end. I popped up (think I need an extra kilo) and we had a bit of a swim back out to find the boat... this wasn't actually the plan!

My first dive of 2011, my first dive with Paul Little, my first dive log book completed! A nice dive down to a big wall of dead men's fingers. A few big lobsters and crabs seen. Lots of tiny star fish. Paul, evidentally didn't have enough weight as he had to pick up a rock. When his grip gave out he grabbed onto me and I dumped all of the air that I could, but we still shot to the surface. Short but sweet.

However, a good time to practise buoyancy control - in fact a perfect descent with a final wee blast into my dry suit leaving me hovering about half a metre off the bottom (Mission Impossible style). Fourth and final dive of wreck speciality. Down the shot line and tied on close by - difficult to find a loop for the reel. Headed S.E. towards the bow tieing the line where I could. Past a hold and a couple of windows which were a bit tight. Found another hold and indicated to Brian that I was going in. Into the hold (overhead environment) and had a wee look around, tieing off where I could. Saw Brian and realised that he'd stayed outside due to the silt. Rules of thirds followed and turned at 140 bar and reeled in. Excellent!!!

Not a good dive and felt a bit bad for making Jane's dive short. Basically I couldn't clear my ears - never happened before so was a bit freaked by it; so much so that I forgot to close my suit's dump valve which no doubt made it worse - it was certainly hard work on the way back up until I realised. Third dive of wreck speciality. A lovely dive on a wreck that's claimed several lives. Dropped down the shot line onto the stern and had a swim around it. Wreck covered with corals, anemones, urchins etc. Lots of fish swimming around. Had a couple of swim-throughs: one through the deck plate and the other in between the hull and the rock. Both were overhead environments. Good fun looking in all of the nooks and crannies.

A nice wall dive to start the day off on a site that's apparently not dived too often. Lots of soft coral, tubey things, urchins, anemones, hermit crabs and the biggest star fish I've ever seen. Hopefully the photo came out. Matt was doing some skills for his Tec40 course. I participated in a 10 minute, 10 metre simulated decompression too (although was looking around a bit hence not having a flat profile).

Second dive of wreck speciality. Much nicer dive. Took out the 1kg that I'd previously added. Tied off a line and used Snoopy Loops to fix in position. Had a wrasse being very friendly. Played with my pony while Matt was doing stuff for his Tec40 course. Hose got stuck, but managed to free it. Lost Matt on the way up due to current, so finished the dive on my own - Brian attempted to retrieve him but they just ended up drifting a fair bit.

First dive of wreck speciality. Extra weight to counter-balance the pony. A bit of a "moment" on the way down as two divers passed me on the shot line heading up as the end that I thought was up suddenly wasn't! I was trying to hold position as Matt had trouble with his ears. Eventually Brian found me on the wreck (I was about to fire my SMB to find him). We did a wee tour of the wreck. Lots of big wrasse to see. Brian got me to draw what I saw and the route taken. Got it partially right!

Doesn't time fly! Was shocked to realise that this was actually going to be a night dive! Quite rough waters with a bit of swell. Under water I saw a lobster, a few wee crabs, lots of kelp and a few urchins. However, all of the constant movement to and fro combined with a narrow field of view from the torch messed with my senses and I had to end the dive early by blowing chunks on the surface - and then again on the boat :-(

A bit disappointed not to dive the Bass Rock (lack of light), but this The Yetts proved to be interesting. Basically a big rock formation with lots of gullies to explore. Saw dead men's fingers, lobsters, crabs, hermit crabs and little silver fish.

Another excellent dive off the Bass Rock. Dropped in at the west end and surfaced on the east after a bit of a drift along the North face. Entire walls covered with dead men's fingers as far as the eye could see! Lots of urchins and starfish - even a sunstar! Lobsters a plenty and a few edible crabs along with velvet swimming crabs. Saw a few doughnut looking things that I can't identify - some with red markings. Also saw a few little fish.

Notes:

First time diving with Billy and Joanne. Had to do a three as the other three on the boat were doing a deep adventure dive (or instucting it). Anyway, a most excellent dive. No torch needed, even at 15 metres! Loads of life in the water: soft coral; urchins; crabs (common and hermit); lobster; wrasse; a small school of big fish of unknown origin; starfish. Had to end the dive short when one of our three shot to the surface - hopefully he'll have a little more weight on next time. Also a shame that I left my Gekko in the car - luckily I was able to borrow a Vyper from someone on the boat who wasn't diving.

First dive of the new year and same for my buddy Matt. A nice shallow one to get everyone tuned in. We just let ourselves drift with the current. Not too much to see - lots of urchins, a handfull of starfish, and LSF. Even a lobster big enough to eat and a hermit crab. Also found a painted goby trying to seek shelter from my light beside a clam.

Did some dive planning before hand and calculated optimum O2 to be 31% for a 35m dive (ppo2 of 1.4), giving a contingency depth of 41.6m (ppo2 of 1.6). Felt much more confident and relaxed this time - was much better visibility and I also had a bright light. Buddied with Keith, who was on his last deep dive. Pony wasn't as much of a hindrance, so buoyancy was much better. Down and up with no problems.

My first dive that caused a real sphincter twitching moment! A lot of things to think about: a slung pony, leading the dive and the fact it was deep. Got down ok and did my visual tasks, but heading up I was rising faster than swimming, so lost sight of the bottom. Panicked and my buoyancy went to pot. Pony made it awkward to inflate or dump air into / out of my dry suit. Also obscured my console. May have also been effects of narcosis - I just don't know. Regardless: a bit of a wake up call!

First dive using Nitrox - well I've got the ticket, so may as well use it. Dropped into a kelp forest. Apart from small fish and urchins, not much to see. Found Bob pretending to be unconscious as Jenny was doing a search and recovery. Is Nitrox less buoyant than air, or did I pick up the wrong weight belt as I had trouble staying down! Chucked in an extra 2kg after I broke the surface.

Boat moved to Gordon's Mooring and we dived "Mickey Mouse." Loads to see at this site. One of the best so far! Lots of coral of all sorts. Found some "Nemo" clown fish - just hope the photos saved as the batteries went flat. Saw 2 turtles and Yukari was feeding one. Sea slugs / cucumbers everywhere there was sand. Also saw huge bump-head parrot fish.

Must be keen! Diving before breakfast!!! First good spot was a lion fish on route to the bommie. Wee swim around and then we headed for the split bommie. Massive fan corals in the split and a few parrot fish. Then up a bit, back to the whale, viewing loads more fish. A sting ray was having a swim below us, but we'd already come up to a higher level, so couldn't go back down closer.

First ever night dive and it was excellent! A bit apprehensive at first, but once in the water, the visibility was good. Highlight was swimming around a tawny shark. Think it was a bit upset at being woken up. Also saw huge flower cod, flute mouths and lots of red eyes - probably shrimps. Found a big crab too.

Saw loads of crabs, mussels, scallops and peacock worms that I've never seen before. Also a conga eel and a male dragonet fish which is quite rare according to the book!

Outgoing tide and rough on the north face, so Brian (the boat skipper) dropped us on the west face for a swim across the south face. Took the shop's fancy torch for a trial ... it leaked! Saw loads of crabs, soft coral and anemones. Also Paul found a huge hermit crab. Shot my new SMB too - so easy with an air bottle version!

Second dive with Mark and at Dive Bunker. Very windy and choppy water, so the dive was along the harbour wall. Lots of soft coral on the wall and a lot of crabs / lobsters - some in pots ready for collection. Will probably not dive with them again - just don't appear professional enough for my liking. First dive with my own BCD and regs. So much easier to breath with non-rental gear! Had a "moment" to myself at the start: forgot to shave, so mask wasn't sealing, which distracted me from closing my shoulder dump valve. So I was sinking and my mask was filling. Managed to relax and fix it all though. A lot of soft corals, dead men's fingers and urchins. Also a good few crabs and lobsters. Surface water smoother this time, so I'll be signing up with Plug Divers I think.

Was more relaxed on this dive - must be getting into the swing of things!! Dropped onto the wreck of the Alfred Erlandsen (although I really didn't recognise it as any part of a boat) and went for a wee swim. Lots of the normal dead men's fingers and sea urchins. Saw a large ballan Wrasse hiding in the rocks and a nice Dahlia Anemone. Also a few crabs. Very enjoyable.

First dive with Dive Safari and Plug Divers. Long trip out on the boat. Took 2 attempts to sink, but got down no bother in the end. Then ... disaster! For my buddy - his dry suit inflator stuck open. He removed the hose, but then his suit flooded and he got cold, so we had to finish the dive. Next time some travel sick pills required! Didn't actually blow chunks, but was close.

Woo hoo! My first real proper dive just for fun! Don't think I'll have a roll and soup an hour before diving again though! Saw loads of dead men's fingers, urchins and a few star fish too. Had a problem with dry suit - inflator button kept jamming, so I was rising, dumping, falling etc. Next time it happens I'll remove the dry suit hose. That explains air usage anyway! Boat dive, but we walked back in the harbour. MOST EXCELLENT!
